Mattress too hard or too soft? How a topper helps
Why you do not need to replace an uncomfortable mattress right away – and which topper changes the feel in which direction.

Mattress too hard: the topper makes the sleeping surface softer
Typical signs of a sleeping surface that is too hard: you sleep on your side and feel the mattress as hard at the shoulder and hip, struggle to find a comfortable position at night, or turn over often. That does not mean you need to replace a mattress that is too hard right away. A topper is a 5 to 7 cm thick layer that is simply placed on top of the mattress – and makes the sleeping surface noticeably softer.
If you prefer it softer, the Premium Komfort Topper is the obvious choice: 7 cm of gel memory foam with firmness level H3 settles softly over the hard mattress. The foam gives way under pressure points and supports everywhere else. The mattress underneath remains the stable base.
Mattress too soft: more support from the firmer side
Typical signs of a sleeping surface that is too soft: you sink in deeply, the pelvis sits lower than the shoulders and legs, and turning over is difficult. A topper can help here too – but only as long as the mattress itself is still in good condition. A topper does not replace a mattress's suspension.
For this case, we recommend the 2-in-1 Komfort Topper: the firmer H4 side gives a mattress that is too soft more support, and can be turned over at any time if you prefer it softer after all.
When a topper is no longer enough
Honestly: no topper can compensate for a deep dip. Once a mattress is worn out – often after roughly a decade, depending on the model and use – the topper settles into the dip and takes on its shape. It evens out small unevenness, but not large dips.
If your mattress is noticeably older or visibly worn out, take a look at our mattresses instead. And if you are unsure: the Topper-Finder takes the age and condition of your mattress into account in its recommendation.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if my mattress is too hard or too soft?
Too hard: lying on your side, the mattress feels hard at the shoulder and hip, you struggle to find a comfortable position, and you turn over often. Too soft: you sink in deeply, the pelvis sits lower than the shoulders and legs, and turning over is difficult. If in doubt, comparing how the mattress feels helps: if the surface feels hard at the shoulder and hip, it is probably too firm; if you sink in noticeably at the pelvis, it is probably too soft.
Can a topper really make a hard mattress softer?
Yes – that is the most common reason for buying a topper. 7 cm of gel memory foam noticeably changes how the mattress feels; the mattress underneath remains as a stable base.
Does the topper need to be exactly the same size as the mattress?
Yes. The topper should be exactly the size of the sleeping surface – so for two mattresses of 90 × 200 cm each, that is 180 × 200 cm. All three toppers are available from 80 to 220 × 200 cm; individual sizes may be temporarily sold out.
Does a topper replace medical advice for discomfort?
No. Our toppers are comfort products, not medical devices. If discomfort persists, please consult a doctor or medical professional – more on this in the note on health-related information.
How does the sleep trial work?
You can try all three toppers at home for 100 nights. If the topper is not right for you, register the return in the returns center – the customer bears the cost of the return. The trial period begins on the day of delivery.
Can I wash the cover?
Yes. On all three toppers, the cover is removable and washable – please follow the care label. The foam core itself must not be washed; it should be aired out instead.
Does a new topper smell?
A slight, material-related smell is normal for foams and fades noticeably within a few days after unpacking and airing it out. The foams are CertiPUR-US®-certified, the covers tested to OEKO-TEX® – details can be found on the respective product page.
